Dr. Eric J. Small, the oncologist treating Gov. Jerry Brown?s cancer,? is highly respected in the profession and a leading expert on the treatment of prostate cancer, colleagues say.
The governor "is in very good hands,?? said Stuart Holden, the director of the Warschaw Prostate Cancer Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Small is "one of the premier medical oncologists who treat prostate cancer in the world.?
Small, who works at UC San Francisco, received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in ?Cleveland, did his residency at Harvard University?s Beth Israel Hospital, and had a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at UC San Francisco.
Since 2001, he has been a clinical professor for the Department of Medicine and Urology at UC San Francisco. In addition to co-directing the urologic oncology program, Small directs the urologic oncology research office, coordinating more than 30 active protocols for the treatment of urologic malignancies, according to his biography.
Dr. David Agus,? a prostate cancer expert who is a professor of medicine and engineering at USC, said Brown is being cared for by "one of the leaders of the country?? in defining which prostate cancer patients need treatment and which can be monitored without radiation.
