A community took the next step to having their own church as the first sod was cut to start construction of the building.
The congregation at Christ the Servant King Church in Hampton was on hand to witness the Bishop of Ely and the Bishop of Peterborough make the first cuts on the site of the new church on the corner of Silver Hill and Braymere Road.
The new church building is expected to be completed by the spring of 2014, and Bishop of Ely the Right Rev Stephen Conway said: ?The rapid development of Hampton with its surge in population means there is a direct need for not only a place of worship but for a building that serves the entire community.?
The congregation currently meet on Sundays at Hampton Vale Primary School, and have been campaigning for a new building of their own for a number of years.
The main hall of the church will seat 250 worshippers, with a smaller hall for 150 visitors. There will also be a community cafe, and one of the distribution centres for Peterborough Foodbank. There will also be a range of courses on offer for residents.
Rev Sylvia Kinder, Priest in Charge at the church said: ?We at Christ the Servant King Church want this to be somewhere where people feel welcomed and included. We?ve had fantastic support from the local community, who have given significant time, money, encouragement and support to this project already.
?We?re continuing to work with them and local businesses to support the build and bring in the final finances to enable all our plans.
?We look forward to having a building from which we can meet social and spiritual needs, where we celebrate the highs of life together and provide support through the lows. Anyone and everyone, all ages, will be welcome here.?
