THQ Press Event with ?Attitude?

Los Angeles ? There might have been a heat wave out on the streets of Los Angeles during SummerSlam week, but it was nice and cozy inside the 200-seat Clive Davis Theater Saturday night, August 18, as THQ played host to an invitation-only press event to unveil "WWE '13," the latest video game in the long-running franchise.

The festivities started off with a bang, as the intimate theater?? situated inside the GRAMMY museum in downtown Los Angeles ? rocked to a dance number performed by Brodus Clay and The Funkadactyls. Afterward, Corey Ledesma, Creative Director of WWE Games, took to the podium and officially welcomed media and fans to what he called "a historic day for WWE Games."

On the eve of SummerSlam, the exclusive affair proved to be the biggest press event in the history of the franchise, with more than 100 media guests in attendance. THQ?s excitement about the game was well warranted, as there was an obvious buzz in the theater. (READ EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH LEDESMA)

"WWE '13," which is scheduled for an October 30 release, features the largest roster ever in a WWE video game, as more than 80 playable Superstars and Divas will do battle on the virtual landscape. With Downloadable Content Packs, that already-impressive number will bump up to more than 100 playable Superstars and Divas. The game?s developers promise that "WWE '13" will bring together the best of today with the elite from one of the most beloved periods in WWE?s history through the game?s highly anticipated Attitude Era single-player campaign.

Ledesma showed exclusive, never-before-seen in-game footage from "WWE '13," and walked the crowd through several exciting new features. Aside from the obvious aesthetic improvements ? this year?s game features the most realistic character models and the smoothest, most fluid animation engine to date ? the revolutionary "WWE Live" has provided the game with a dramatic audio overhaul, making gamers feel as though they are actually at a WWE Live Event.

Ledesma next introduced the audience to "Catching Finishers," a brand-new feature that allows competitors to literally catch their opponent in mid-air and nail him or her with a finishing move, completely swinging the momentum of a match. Shortly after, a cheer went up through the auditorium when footage of a superplex onto the ringside floor ? a monumental move that?s new to "WWE '13" ? flashed across the screen.

New, devastating maneuvers permeate the game, as players will now be able to crash through the ringside barricade, perform finishers on top of the announce table and even destroy the ring, ala Big Show and Mark Henry in a new feature dubbed "Spectacular Moments." Ledesma went on to say, "We are all about customization," and explained the game?s Create-an-Arena feature, which gives players total control over where their favorite Superstars will do battle.

house designs - Ensure a Home Renovation That's Worthy of Your ...

You should go all the way and consider a new house design for your next home renovation. The added expenses make all the difference, especially if you're forced to strip down the walls to expose and treat a pest infestation. Renovation projects involve several phases, but you can always hire someone to handle all the details, from the blueprint to the finishing touches. The design should be your priority, though, since all the other aspects comply with the floor plan. You don't have to hire an architect if you're only renovating the first floor or your backyard, but you'll need a good home builder who'll execute the details in time and within the quoted budget.

You can always look for home plans online if you're stuck with a tight budget. There are sites which let you download blueprints for a fee, which is recommended if you know a little about renovation and you're certain the specifications match with your project. A house designer can ensure the changes are structurally sound, though. He can also recommend themes that complement the houses in your neighborhood and your local climate. Many home designers also have connections to contractors and builders, so you'll likely get a good deal out of the referrals and packaged services your designer offers.

Having a floor plan and home design is but part of the process; the actual renovation will eat up most of your budget. Make sure you make the most out of the expenses and ask for detailed breakdown of the quote. Contractors usually offer ballpark quotes until you ask for specifics, especially if you're hiring their services to renovate your house and design it. A detailed quote usually comes with consultation fees, but the amount is a trifle compared to the inflated estimate you'll receive otherwise.

You still have to consider the variables of the project. If you want to include details which aren't covered by the recommendations, then you'll have to shoulder costs which exceed the quote. Most people insist on having their preferred bathroom or kitchen fixtures installed, especially if the package only includes stock installations. You can also cut down costs by choosing more affordable fixtures, like cedar cupboards instead of oak or mahogany, vinyl paneling instead of marble tiling. A fixed quote ensures you'll have everything covered so you can reallocate the expenses where these matter the most.

Builders also require slack to cover for expenses which can't be included in the quote. These are provisional costs determined during the renovation project, such as a structural flaw discovered on the foundation or the need to replace wall paneling that's crawling with black mold or termites. A provisional sum should be your builder's best guesstimate, and it shouldn't be confused with the ballpark quote of the initial consultation. Again, this provision works both ways. If the builder determines your house can do without aspects of renovation detailed on the fixed quote, then you're entitled to receive the corresponding credit and savings. Choosing house designs shouldn't be too difficult if you hire people who'll take over the small details. Hire the best designer and contractor and ensure your renovation is a worthwhile investment.

Consider house designs by Peter Downes if you?re looking for themes on your next renovation. House designers offer plans that make the most out of your floor space and climate, so choose consultation services and make your investment count.

Flight attendant's career landing in Guinness book

HONOLULU (AP) ? A flight attendant is landing in the Guinness World Records book after spending 63 years moving about the cabin.

Ron Akana, 83, worked his last route over the weekend on a United Airlines flight from Denver to Kauai, ending his career in the state where it began.

Hawaii, however, wasn't his final stop. His destination was retirement in Boulder, Colo., where he has been living since 2002 to be closer to his grandchildren. He spent his first few days of retirement writing thank-you notes to well-wishers.

"I wasn't expecting this much attention," he said Tuesday.

Akana joined the airline while a student at the University of Hawaii in 1949, when friends spotted a newspaper ad. "We didn't even know what a flight steward was," he recalled. "But it meant getting to the mainland, which was a huge deal in those days.

"It seemed pretty exciting and it proved to be more than that," he said.

And so he became one of United's first male flight attendants. "We just liked working with girls," he said.

The Korean War took him away from his job for two years when he was drafted in 1951. Akana said his most memorable moments included meeting the cast of the 1953 movie "From Here to Eternity," ? mentioning Frank Sinatra and Deborah Kerr by name ? and going from propeller planes to jets, which cut travel time in half.

Over the years, he's seen it all. Passengers would dress up, not down. Think suits, not flip-flops. Smoking was no big deal, not a federal offense.

Over time, though, things changed. The meal service became better. No more smoke. In-flight movies, which he said started to be shown seven or eight years after he began his career. And, of course, tight security after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Guinness World Records came calling a few months ago and later sent him a plaque recognizing him as the longest-serving flight attendant. He's been told he'll appear in the record book in October.

To get a sense of how long he's been in the air, consider that if his 200 million miles counted toward United's frequent flyer program, he could treat the entire town of Big Rock, Ill., population 1,138, to a first class trip from Chicago to Honolulu and back ? then once a month for the next 12 years, he'd still have enough miles to travel with his wife, Elizabeth, anywhere they want in the continental U.S.

Akana decided to retire after he was offered a buyout. But he admits being tempted to hang on for the arrival of the next super jet, the Boeing 787. "I shall have to watch from the sidelines," he said.

While he's now retired, Akana is not done flying. From now on, his wife will be joining him.

"I got terrific travel privileges," he said, adding: "There's a lot to be seen."

(AP) ? Dozens of Harvard University students are being investigated for cheating after school officials discovered they may have shared answers or plagiarized on a final exam.

Harvard officials declined to release the name of the class, the students' names or the exact number being investigated, citing privacy laws.

The undergraduate class had a minimum of 250 students and possible cheating was discovered in roughly half the take-home exams, university officials said Thursday.

"These allegations, if proven, represent totally unacceptable behavior that betrays the trust upon which intellectual inquiry at Harvard depends," President Drew Faust said.

Each student whose work is in question has been called to appear before a subcommittee of the Harvard College Administrative Board, which reviews issues of academic integrity, said Jay M. Harris, dean of undergraduate Education. He emphasized that none of the allegations has been proven and said there's no evidence of widespread cheating at Harvard.

"The facts that are before us are that we have a problem in this one course," Harris said. "I hope that doesn't sound overly naive, I don't want to be naive, but this is what we have. The rest would be speculation.

"Looking at the students we have and the work that they do, I would be loathe to say this is something that represents Harvard students generally."

The spring course included undergraduates at all class levels, Harris said. A teaching assistant noticed some possible problems on the tests, including evidence that students collaborated on answers or used the same long, identical strings of words. The exam had clear instructions that no collaboration was allowed, Harris said.

The assistant notified the professor, who referred the case in May to the administrative board. After interviewing some students, the board found what Harris characterized as "cause for concern."

Depending on the offense, the punishments range from an admonition, a sort of warning for a first offense, to being forced to withdraw from Harvard for a year. It wasn't immediately clear what sanctions any student who has graduated may face.

There's no timeline for when the investigation will be finished, Harris said.

"We believe in due process for students and fairness," he said. "Everyone wants it done yesterday, but we have to be patient. It's going to take as long as it takes."

A Harvard spokesman said he knows of no incidents in recent memory of possible cheating at the university on this scale.

Michael Zimmet, a freshman from Aspen, Colo., said news of the investigation "was really surprising."

"You think of Harvard as somewhere where people are academically honest and interested in their course work," he said.

Tiffany Fonseca, a sophomore from Boston, said she didn't know the details of what happened, but that it was easy to see how students could talk to each other about a take-home test.

"I'm kind of shocked, but I'm not," she said.

In response to the allegations, a Harvard committee on academic integrity led by Harris will present recommendations on how to enforce faculty-wide expectations of academic honesty.

In an email Thursday, Michael D. Smith, dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, urged faculty members to clarify policies on student collaboration and work to "foster a culture of honesty and integrity."

The school plans to initiate broad conversations on campus about academic honesty, including why it's vital to intellectual inquiry. It is also considering instituting an honor code. Such codes at other schools, for instance, set standards for honesty and require students to sign completed work, attesting that they followed those standards.

"We really think we need to work harder," Harris said. "We do think it's an opportunity to really put out before the community how much we value integrity."

It's not a surprise that Harvard isn't immune to possible cheating, said Teresa Fishman of the International Center for Academic Integrity at Clemson University. Twenty years of data shows that a quarter to a third of students across all levels of collegiate education admit cheating on tests, she said.

Reasons range from indifference to the subject to believing you must to keep up with other cheaters. Fishman added there's widespread "wishful thinking" in academia that the real problem is elsewhere. An investigation and action at a high-profile school such as Harvard might benefit other colleges, she said.

"That might even encourage other schools to say, 'OK, well I can admit that we have a little bit of a problem here with cheating, too," Fishman said.

The concert represented the world premiere of the appropriately named song "Reach for the Stars," by rapper and songwriter will.i.am. It was beamed via radio signal about 150 million miles (241 million km) back to Earth from Curiosity's landing spot on Mars' Gale Crater at 1 p.m. PDT (4 p.m. EDT).

"The point of the song is to remind people ? that anything is possible if you discipline yourself and dedicate yourself and stand for something," the musician said today from Curiosity's mission control center at NASA's?Jet Propulsion Laboratory?(JPL) in Pasadena, Calif.

The music arrived there during an educational event held for students from the Los Angeles neighborhood where will.i.am grew up.

"There's no words to explain how amazing this is," will.i.am. said. "These kids here are from Boyle Heights, the same neighborhood I'm from. We don't have to just end up in the 'hood. But it's a hard thing. The hardest thing is discipline."

Students and rocket scientists alike bobbed their heads and clapped as the song's strains came back to Earth.

"Why do they say the sky is the limit
When I've seen footprints on the moon
And I know the sky may be high
But baby it ain't really that high
And I know that Mars might be far
But baby it ain't really that far
Let's reach for the stars"

Also onhand at the event was former NASA astronaut Leland Melvin, now the agency's associate administrator for education.

"Never give up," Melvin said. "People told me that I couldn't be an astronaut. Whatever you want to be, whatever you dream, you can do, if you put your mind to it."

The $2.5 billion Curiosity landed on Mars Aug. 5 (PDT) after launching in November of last year. The song was loaded onto the rover before its departure from Earth, and will.i.am, part of the hip-hop group The Black-Eyed Peas, was at JPL in person to?watch Curiosity land.

The car-size rover is embarking on a two-year mission to search for signs that the Red Planet may have ever been?habitable to microbial life.

AP source: Redskins release K Gano, sign Cundiff

(AP) ? One day after he appeared to win the Washington Redskins kicking job, Graham Gano is out of work. His replacement is Billy Cundiff, who spent two days unemployed after getting cut by the Baltimore Ravens.

Gano was released and Cundiff signed by the Redskins on Tuesday, according to a person familiar with the situation who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team had yet to make a formal announcement.

It was an abrupt development in the Redskins kicking carousel. Gano stood at this locker feeling excited and looking forward to the season Monday after his lone competition in training camp, Neil Rackers, was sent packing when the team made its first round of cuts.

But Gano's numbers have never been impressive. He has made 73.8 percent of his field goal attempts since joining the Redskins (No. 25 in the AP Pro32) late in the 2009 season, the second-worst percentage in the league over the last three seasons.

Gano, 25, missed 11 attempts in 2010, tied for most in the NFL. He had a league-high 10 misses last season, although five of those were blocked. He beat out Rackers without attempting a field goal in the Redskins' preseason games, coming out ahead based on his performance during practice.

Cundiff's statistics are only marginally better. The 32-year-old kicker has a career field goal percentage of 76.7 with the Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, Cleveland Browns and Baltimore. He joined the Ravens during the 2009 season and went to the Pro Bowl season in 2010, going 26 for 29, but last season he missed a potential game-tying, 32-yarder against the New England Patriots in the waning seconds of the AFC title game.

Cundiff also has limited range. He is 5 for 19 over his career from 50-plus yards, including just 1 for 6 last season. He was cut Sunday by the Ravens, who opted to go with rookie Justin Tucker.___

5 Extreme Sports You Didn't Know Existed

August 25th, 2012.

Today we have a list of 5 awkward extreme sports you may didn't know existed. What's more, not all of them are considered sports and rather present dangerous recreational activities. Let's roll...

Volcano surfing

Volcano surfing aka ash boarding aka volcano boarding is a weird sport in which riders hike up the erupted volcano and slide down, sitting or standing on a thin Plywood or metal board. What makes this sport extreme is the fact that you can fall off and get cut by the rough volcanic ash. Protective gear, like jump suits and goggles are used for those reasons.

Limbo skating

In limbo skating or roller limbo a person drives on roller skates underneath an obstacle with a very low height like a horizontal pole without touching it. In order to do so, athletes spread their legs apart as much as they can and lean their upper body forward, with the face almost touching the ground. As with traditional limbo dance, several athletes may participate in a competition in which a pole is lowered from round to round. Whoever touches the pole is out, until only one winner remains. A variation of this sport is when athletes are skating under as many cars as possible.

Powerbocking

Powerbocking is jumping and running with elastic-like spring-loaded stilts. It's considered an extreme sport, though some folks think of it as a form of exercise. The stilts themselves are often referred to generically as "bocks" or "powerbocks," or by their brand name. Each boot consists of a foot-plate with snowboard type bindings, rubber foot pad (aka hoof), and a fibreglass leaf spring. Using only their weight, and few movements, an athlete is able to jump 3-5 ft (1-1.5 metres) off the ground and run up to 20 mph (32 km/h)... Jumping stilts are best known from the closing ceremony of the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing.

Underwater hockey

Underwater hockey aka Octopush is a non-contact sport in which two teams of up to ten players (with six players on each team in play at once) compete to maneuver a puck across the bottom of a swimming pool into goals. Games consist of two halves, typically 10-15 minutes long and a short half-time interval. At half time the two teams switch ends. Players wear a diving mask, snorkel and swimfins, and carry a short stick for playing the puck.

Zorbing

Zorbing, which is also known as globe-riding or sphereing, involves rolling downhill in an orb, usually made of transparent plastic. This sport is generally performed on a gentle slope, but can also be done on a level surface, permitting more rider control. There are two types of orbs, harnessed and non-harnessed, with the latter being able to carry up to 3 riders. Double-harness spheres have different slope requirements, and must only be operated in specific locations...

Lilly heart drug Effient fails to carve new niche

MUNICH (Reuters) - Eli Lilly's new heart drug Effient failed to beat the older product Plavix in a head-to-head clinical study, dashing hopes for its expanded use in treating less critically sick heart patients.

The finding, released at a medical meeting on Sunday, is good news for rival AstraZeneca, whose competitor product Brilinta did show an edge over Plavix in a comparable group of patients in an analysis published last year.

The battle among the different blood-thinning drugs, which are all designed to prevent dangerous clots in heart patients, has moved up a gear this year with the expiry of patents on Sanofi and Bristol-Myers Squibb's Plavix.

That has opened the door to cut-price generic versions of Plavix, or clopidogrel, on both sides of the Atlantic, upping the ante on the newer rivals to prove they really offer a distinctive edge.

Lilly and its partner Daiichi Sankyo had hoped to prove that Effient was a better option for patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) who do not get a stent to open blocked arteries or bypass surgery.

ACS covers a range of serious conditions, including heart attacks and unstable angina, caused by a sudden reduction of blood flow to part of the heart.

In fact, the large study funded by the two companies and involving more than 9,000 patients found there was no difference between Effient and Plavix in preventing heart attacks, strokes and deaths. Both drugs were tested alongside aspirin.

There was also no difference in serious bleeding complications, which is always a risk with blood-thinners.

There was a lower risk of adverse events in patients on Effient after 12 months of treatment, but this trend was not conclusive and lead investigator Dr Magnus Ohman of Duke University Medical Center said further exploration of the finding was needed.

SURPRISING RESULT

Most trials evaluating anti-clotting drugs for ACS have focused on patients undergoing invasive procedures, usually getting a stent - a tiny wire mesh tube that is left in the coronary artery to prevent it from closing up again.

But some 40 percent of patients who are not in urgent need of such invasive intervention are managed solely with drug therapy, and it had been thought that they should do better on a newer and more potent medicine like Effient.

Daiichi research head Glenn Gormley said the trial result was "not the outcome we anticipated" and medical experts at the European Society of Cardiology annual congress, where the findings were reported, agreed the result was unexpected.

"The outcome is a bit surprising because we think usually that more aggressive therapy in the face of acute coronary syndrome would lead to less adverse outcome - but the data is what the data is," said Dr William Zoghbi, president of the American College of Cardiology.

Effient was launched three years ago and the drug has taken off more slowly than many analysts expected, with worldwide sales last year of $302.5 million. Analysts, on average, expect sales to reach $1.1 billion by 2016, according to Thomson Reuters Pharma.

The results of the Effient study were published simultaneously online by the New England Journal of Medicine.

Explosion kills 39 at Venezuela's biggest refinery

PARAGUANA/CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) - An explosion tore through Venezuela's biggest refinery on Saturday, killing at least 39 people, wounding dozens and halting operations at the facility in the worst accident to hit the OPEC nation's oil industry.

Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez told Reuters no production units at the Amuay refinery were affected and that there were no plans to halt exports, a sign that the incident will likely have little impact on fuel prices.

Photographs taken shortly after the pre-dawn blast showed wrecked vehicles, flattened fences and giant storage tanks buckling and crumpling as flames lit the night sky. A National Guard building in the area was shattered and officials said a 10-year-old child was among the dead.

A gas leak caused the explosion and most of those killed were National Guard troops who were providing security for the 645,000 barrel-per-day (bpd) facility, Ramirez said, adding that the fire was under control.

"There was a National Guard barracks near the explosion. ... The installation was too close to the operations," Ramirez told Reuters in an exclusive telephone interview, adding that production could resume at Amuay within two days at most.

"We need to boost production at other refineries and look for floating storage near the complex," he said.

The incident follows repeated accidents and outages during the last decade across installations run by state oil company PDVSA that have limited output and crimped expansion plans.

Amuay has partially shut operations at least twice this year due to a small fire and the failure of a cooling unit.

Those problems have spurred accusations of inept management by the government of President Hugo Chavez, who is running for re-election on October 7.

Acrimony over the explosion could spill over into an already bitter campaign, but s unlikely to overtake larger political concerns such as crime and the economy.

"I want to convey the deepest pain that I've felt in my heart and soul since I started to get information about this tragedy," Chavez said in phone call to state TV. He declared three days of mourning.

FIRE UNDER CONTROL

Venezuela has traditionally been a big supplier of fuel to the United States and the Caribbean, but refinery shutdowns have become so common that they rarely affect market prices.

Traders told Reuters the docks at the refinery were shut, and tankers were anchored offshore waiting. They said this would cause delays to some of the country's exports.

The explosion broke windows at homes in the area, a peninsula in the Caribbean sea in western Venezuela, as well as at Amuay's main administrative building.

The blast was also felt out at sea in the Paraguana bay, where some crew members on moored tankers were knocked off their feet by the shockwave, one shipping source said.

Ramirez said the fire that started after the explosion had only affected nine storage tanks holding mostly crude oil and some processed fuels including naphtha.

Officials said two tanks were still burning off residual fuel, and a Reuters witness at the scene said large black clouds of smoke still hung above the area.

Ramirez said existing fuel stocks around the country were sufficient to guarantee 10 days of exports and local sales. PDVSA has no plans to invoke force majeure, he said, which lets companies stop shipments due to accidents or extreme weather.

Amuay, together with a neighbouring facility, forms part of the Paraguana Refining Center, the second-biggest refinery complex in the world, with an overall capacity of 955,000 bpd.

In 2010, there was a massive fire at a PDVSA fuel terminal on the Caribbean island of Bonaire, then a blaze at a dock at the Paraguana complex that halted shipping for four days.

Also in 2010, a natural gas exploration rig, the Aban Pearl, sank in the Caribbean. All 95 workers were rescued safely.

How to Evaluate Green Home Certifications? | eLocal.com

eLocal Expert Network: Home Edition
In today?s home improvement and construction market, the word green seems to mean everything and nothing at the same time. Nearly all products, repairs, upgrades and new projects are attempting to take advantage of the green industry.

While the industry?s intentions are good, the market is so saturated that homeowners are often left in the fog about what green changes are worth their money: because, while helping the environment is a noble pursuit, it doesn?t always turn people to action. However, if those green changes come with some big savings, then people will line up to sign up.

One of the emerging trends in the green industry is the certification of entire homes under national and state sponsored green certification programs. As with any new green trend, we want to evaluate its value for concerned homeowners. Understanding your options will ensure that your home is green and affordable, rather than just the victim of the most recent marketing campaigns.

National Certification Programs

David Cohen from Energy Upgrade California adds, ?The national appraisal organizations have created appraisal processes to help appraisers document all of the green upgrade work that may have been done in a home, but a green home certification is the only way those improvements can be vetted through a third party, leading to credibility and confidence in the information.?

There are a wide variety of national green certification programs available. These larger companies often carry the most clout because of their wide recognition and partnerships with other nationwide companies. LEED is the most prominent green certification program, while the ICC 700 National Green Building Standard, Build Green, Energy Star and Greenpoint Rated programs are close behind. Choosing between these programs is often a matter of personal preference. They each have fairly similar requirements, though homeowners should consider the associated certification fees and how they may differ.

Grand View Builders adds, ?The NAHB has great information on green certification, including a spreadsheet rating system displayed here which compares different certification systems and their cost and technical requirements.?

State Certification Programs

Nearly every state also has its green certification program. In some cases, these programs are sponsored by larger national brands like Energy Star, while in other instances they are managed by the state?s energy department. Many of these programs bear resemblance to the larger national initiatives. However, homeowners may find more value and opportunity with smaller state run programs.

Considerations

Choosing to get your home certified is for many people, a straightforward matter of money. Of course, the exact amount that a home certification program will return to you varies depending on each homeowner?s situation, but there are several steps you can take to determine if you can expect a positive ROI. First, consider all the costs of meeting the program?s requirements. This includes everything from new appliances, parts, labor, and green certified inspectors. If you are having a retrofit done, you may have to pay for additional repair and inspection costs.

Check the real estate market in your area to see if there are other homes that have whole certifications and how that has affected their resale value. Consider that in some real estate markets, prospective buyers can specify that they only wanted certified homes. If your home is located in a market where this is prevalent, you may consider the benefit of being included in those searches.

If you live in an area where green certification is not prevalent and unknown, then the program is probably not worth the cost.

Sam Lazarus notes, ?In the current soft residential real estate market, I am not so sure if such certifications are worth the benefit. There may be a time and place for that, however generally speaking this direction does not convince me as a worth-while investment.?

Alternatives

Across the board, our experts generally agreed that whole home certifications were not worth the investment. Their argument is popular: stating that a homeowner can get the same energy savings and ROI simply by upgrading their existing home appliances and not seeking third party recognition. Upgrading insulation, appliances, heating units, etc. can have huge economic benefits that you?ll start saving on immediately. Furthermore, if you do sell your house, you can use your previous utilities bills to clearly illustrate the house?s energy efficiency. The bottom line: whole home certifications represent a residential space that is exceptionally efficient, but certification is costly and commonly used as a marketing incentive. If those labels are relevant in your home?s real estate market, then they may be worth it. If not, homeowners are far better off upgrading as their finances allow and creating the greenest home they can.

Celebrate National Waffle Day with waffle-flavored vodka

Would you celebrate National Waffle Day with this flavored concoction? (Georgi Vodka)September 24 is National Waffle Day, a day to mark the breakfast delight enjoyed by millions of people around the world everyday. To help celebrate the occasion, Georgi Vodka has created a line of waffle-flavored vodkas.

The new flavors are being debuted at two locations on Friday: The Holiday Inn Express in Stony Brook, New York and at Kennedy's Restaurant, in New York City. Along with the new drinks, the Holiday Inn Express will be serving complimentary vodka flavored waffles to all guests and patrons 21-years-old and over.

"We try to think of flavors that other vodkas don't have," Martin Silver, President of Star Industries, maker of Georgi Vodka, told Yahoo! News. "I took my sales team out for breakfast to think of new flavor ideas. I asked them what they wanted to eat and they said pancakes and waffles. And we pretty much decided right then to give the waffle flavors a try."

Georgi's is offering a number of waffles flavors, including banana waffle and chocolate chip. The flavors join a collection of unique flavors under their brand, including bubble gum, coconut, candy cane, popcorn, mango and French Vanilla.

"The federal government is very specific with what you put on your labels," Silver told Yahoo! regarding the French Vanilla flavor. "Even Grey Goose only has 'La Vanille.' We use a special bean that the government says you must use if you want to call it French Vanilla."

Waffles have existed for thousands of years, dating back to ancient Greece. And they came to America along with some of the earliest European settlers in the 1600's. Thomas Jefferson himself is credited with introducing the first waffle iron to Americans.

And over at Kennedy's, you will be able to enjoy your vodka-infused waffle with a special "waffle-tini" created by Georgi, which features a mini waffle garnish on the rim of the glass.

"More and more chefs cooking with spirits, they like to get creative," Silver said.

So, which of the new flavors is the biggest high with Silver's own company?

"Everybody likes the chocolate chip," he said.

Look Out!: Ann Arbor Cars to Communicate with One Another to Avoid Crashes [Slide Show]

automobile, autonomous, safety, trafficHITTING THE ROAD: The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and eight automakers have kicked off a year-long test to determine whether vehicles that talk to each other can prevent accidents. Image: Courtesy of Susan Kuchinskas

ANN ARBOR, MICH.?Driving is a crazy idea. Every day in the U.S., millions of people get behind the wheel of a car, truck or bus and attempt to navigate the two-ton machines at speeds often exceeding 110 kilometers an hour, hoping they will avoid each other as well as stationary objects. Every year more than 10 million of them fall short of this goal, resulting in accidents that claim tens of thousands of lives (pdf), according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

With so many other aspects of our lives guided by computers that never get sleepy or distracted, NHTSA is considering how to subtract at least some human error from driving.

In Ann Arbor this week NHTSA and eight automakers kicked off a yearlong test to determine whether vehicles that talk to each other can prevent accidents. The Safety Pilot Model Deployment project brings together about 2,800 cars, trucks and buses equipped with dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) devices that constantly transmit "here-I-am" signals to vehicles around them.

This deployment is the culmination of 15 years of work by the Crash Avoidance Metrics Partnership, a public?private research consortium that includes Mercedes?Benz, General Motors, Toyota, Honda, Ford, Nissan, Hyundai/Kia and Volkswagen. The auto companies have been working with NHTSA to develop technology that will help cars, trucks, buses and other vehicles avoid crashes by communicating with nearby vehicles and roadway infrastructure, including traffic signals, dangerous road segments and grade crossings.

Now, they think it's ready to hit the road.

The Ann Arbor test, managed by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) will test several different accident-prevention approaches. The most sophisticated includes 64 cars, three buses and three trucks driven by the public and specially built by the automakers with a sampling of six safety-warning features, along with video cameras to capture traffic incidents.

The warning systems can alert drivers to hazards such as a pedestrian ahead or a car moving into an intersection from the side. An additional 100 cars and eight trucks owned by study participants have been retrofitted with the aftermarket equipment necessary to detect other cars and deliver warnings if they get too close to each other.

The rest of the cars, trucks and buses participating in the safety study have been retrofitted with only DSRC radios that broadcast basic safety messages about surrounding automobiles' speed and location 10 times per second among this smaller fleet. Messages travel on a special wi-fi spectrum designated for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has reserved 75 megahertz (MHz) of spectrum in the 5.9-gigahertz (GHz) band specifically for DSRC-equipped intelligent transportation systems.

A car's DSRC signal extends more than 300 meters in all directions, so, unlike unidirectional radar or a sensor, it can pick up the signal of another car approaching too closely from any angle. The "here-I-am" message cannot be blocked by another car, so it can, for example, detect a hazard two cars ahead.

When one of the 178 vehicles with complete warning systems picks up a signal from another that is too close, a signal alerts the driver to take action, with the hope of turning a collision into a near miss and a near miss into an even bigger miss.

Each carmaker and device manufacturer has designed its own proprietary warning system, although these systems adhere to a specific standard governed by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) to ensure they can communicate. The systems include bells, flashing lights and even seat vibrations to alert drivers. For this test, boxes containing the V2V equipment have been installed in the cars' trunks. If this technology comes to market, it will be more fully integrated along with all the other systems.

"The idea is to give that driver who might possibly be distracted?maybe by talking to another passenger or fiddling with the radio?that extra little buffer to get his attention back on the road and react accordingly," says Mike Schagrin, program manager for the U.S. Department of Transportation's Intelligent Transportation Systems Safety Program.

NHTSA estimates that vehicle-to-vehicle communication, or V2V, could eliminate 81 percent of all crashes where the driver is not impaired, saving lives not to mention billions of dollars in crash-related costs.

NHTSA plans to decide whether to require V2V systems on new cars in 2013 and new trucks in 2014. Eventually, the technology could be required in all vehicles, at a cost of approximately $100 per car, according to Christopher Wilson, principal of Christopher Wilson Consulting, who was involved in early research into connected vehicles.

Smarter cars?even autonomous vehicles that can navigate the roads without the guidance of a fallible human?have been in the works for years. In fact, many high-end autos already come equipped with radar and sensors that alert drivers when they drift out of their lanes or if their car approaches another vehicle too closely.

But in order to get a broad safety benefit, a significant number of vehicles must have DSRC, and achieving that penetration would likely require some kind of government mandate. The Ann Arbor study aims to, among other things, determine just how much penetration will be enough to get the safety benefit.

Nobody is arguing with the theory that cooperative driving could save 30,000 lives a year and billions of gallons of gasoline, Wilson says. But the car companies have to get on board. "All the automakers, and the government, too, realize that everyone has to do this together, or it's not going to happen. The mandate process pretty much won't go forward if the automakers scream too much," he says.

UMTRI was one of several entities that submitted proposals for the $20-million project. Most vehicles in the test are driven by employees of the University of Michigan Health System or nearby residents. The theory is they will provide a highly concentrated environment of vehicle-to-vehicle interactions.

Most participants are being paid $200 to have the device installed and show up to have data uploaded a few times during the year. If participants drop out, do not drive as much as expected or if the data stream is low, UMTRI may add drivers to the program.

DOT will begin crunching all this information after six months; it hopes to have a preliminary cost-benefit analysis completed in the fall of 2013.

If the pilot succeeds, the first DSRC-equipped cars could hit the road in 2018, according to auto industry consultant Richard Bishop, principal of Bishop Consulting. But even a successful test, Wilson says, will not answer the most pressing question for carmakers: "What are the ongoing costs of running this system, and who will foot the bill?"
