Home prenatal scans help keep babies safe

KEEPING a close watch on baby and mother during pregnancy is crucial, but the equipment to do this is often found only in hospitals. So mothers who live far from medical centres must make long journeys to receive routine scans.

This could soon change thanks to a portable fetal-monitoring package based around a smartphone. It could provide broader access to cheap monitoring systems for those in remote locations and in countries without access to the most advanced prenatal technologies.

Designed by a team of engineers, computer scientists and obstetricians at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the system uses commercially available sensors to monitor the fetal heartbeat during pregnancy or the mother's contractions during labour. That information is sent via Bluetooth to an Android smartphone, which processes it before relaying it to the main hospital database using whatever connections are available.

Dimitrios Mastrogiannis, the lead physician on the project, says that other health measures such as maternal oxygen saturation or blood-glucose monitors could be integrated into the system.

The work is being presented at the BodyNets conference in Oslo, Norway, this week.

Where Shadows Fall

Where Shadows Fall

(WIP) Araland, once a growing kingdom of peace and prosperity, is being ravaged by black magic and dark creatures... Do you have what it takes to stop them?

"Where Shadows Fall" is set in the slowly falling kingdom of Araland in the year of 614AA (Anno Aeryx). Having been a kingdom predominantly of internal peace, some areas have become corrupted by evil magic and dark creatures. No-one is entirely sure who or what lies at the head of this evil spead, but everyone knows its intent is to take over Araland.

The great prophet Aeryx foretold of this great evil centuries ago, but he also secretly spoke of a group of unwitting young warriors, who would rise to the cause and save Araland from its fate. Now, nearly 600 years later, the time has come for those warriors to be chosen. Only they will know who they are, though some say that Aeryx's soul will guide them on their path.

The fate of the kingdom rests on the shoulders of these brave ones - do you have what it takes to join them?

How to replace a cracked screen on an iPhone 5

How to DIY replace a cracked screen on an iPhone 5

Between our news coverage leading up to the iPhone 5, our definitive review of the iPhone 5 following its release, and iOS 6, there's only one thing left to do -- open it up and show you what the iPhone 5 looks like on the inside!

That's right, iMore has teamed up with The Pod Drop to show you how to take apart a brand new iPhone 5, and even replace a cracked or broken screen if you're somehow not covered by AppleCare or warranty, now or in the future.

Sacrificing an iPhone 5 for science

Fortunately, none of us were clumsy enough to break our iPhones by accident (yet!). Unfortunately, that means in order to show you how the DIY repair is done, we had to break one on purpose. We captured the moment. (Purely for science, of course.)

Disclaimer: As with any repair, neither iMore nor The Pod Drop can be held responsible for any damage you may do to your device. It?s also worth considering that opening up your device to perform any repair or modification can and will void your Apple warranty. If you don?t feel comfortable opening your device, don?t. Use extreme care and caution when performing a repair on any device.

What you need to DIY replace a cracked screen on an iPhone 5

  • iPhone 5 with a cracked display (Any model)
  • iPhone 5 LCD & digitizer replacement - Coming soon!
  • Suction cup - Buy now
  • 5-point pentalobular (security) screwdriver - Buy now
  • Standard #00 Phillips screwdriver - Buy now
  • Spudger tool - Buy now
  • Razor blade - Buy now (You can also use any straight edge razor blade you pick up at your local hardware store.)

Video walkthrough

Our video will walk you through disassembly to reassembly. Even though it's possible to perform this repair using only the video, we highly suggest reading the written walkthrough and viewing the high quality images below. Both guides are meant to compliment each other so we suggest reading and watching both before actually performing the repair.

Power off your iPhone 5

Before performing any repair, you should always turn your iPhone completely off by holding down the Power Button and using the Slide to power off feature. Once the iPhone has completely turned off, you can move on to the next step.

Remove the two security screws in the dock connector

There are two security screws on either side of the Lightning connector port. Use your security screwdriver to remove them.

Remove the damaged display

There are two methods for removing the display. If you've cracked the bottom pretty badly you may find it hard to get a seal with a suction cup. We'll walk you through both ways of removing the display.

Suction cup method

This is the method we recommend and the one you should use if you can get a seal. If not, use the straight edge razor method below.

  1. Position your suction cup firmly above the Home button.
  2. Gently pull upwards while holding the phone down with your other hand.
  3. The display is in there pretty good so you'll have to apply quite a bit of strength to pull it out. Just make sure you keep your hand over the top of the iPhone as you don't want to completely pull the display off. There are still cables attached underneath.
  4. Once the display has dislodged from the device, swing it upwards to expose the cables connecting it underneath.
  5. Move on to the next section.

Straight edge razor blade method

If the bottom of your iPhone 5 screen has shattered badly, it'll be next to impossible to get a good enough seal to pry it up. You'll need a straight edged razor blade for this method. Be careful and work slowly not only so you don't damage the iPhone but more importantly, so you don't cut or hurt yourself.

  1. Start at either side of the Home button and carefully work the razor blade between the frame and the glass.
  2. Slowly pry upwards until you get an edge freed enough that you can slip a pry tool or spudger in between.
  3. Now set the razor blade aside and continue to work around the bottom and bottom edges until you free the display from the frame.
  4. Do not pull it straight upwards but instead, swing it upwards as there are still cables attached at the top we need to remove.

Remove the iPhone 5 display panel

  1. There's a silver shield covering the LCD and digitizer cables. Remove the three screws holding the shield in place with your #00 Phillips screwdriver.
  2. Gently lift the shield out of the iPhone 5.
  3. Now you have a clear view of the cables holding the display assembly to the logic board. Use your spudger or pry tool to carefully pry all three cables from the logic board.

You can now lift the front digitizer and LCD assembly off the device.

Ready the new iPhone 5 display

Odds are your new replacement display will come stripped down to nothing but the display assembly. We'll need to remove some pieces off the old cracked display to place on the new display before laying the new assembly in place.

Remove the display shield, earpiece shield, and earpiece assembly

  1. There are a total of eight screws holding the display and earpiece shield in place. They are outlined in the picture below. Remove all eight screws using your #00 Phillips screwdriver.
  2. Now use your pry tool or spudger to carefully lift up the display shield off the back of the display. The best way is to slip your pry tool beneath the shield at the bottom on either side of the Home button. The shield will easily lift off.
  3. Now remove the earpiece shield at the top by lifting it off and setting it aside.
  4. The actual earpiece assembly sits directly below the shield and will easily lift off as well. Set it aside.

Remove the front-facing camera and sensor cable

  1. The front-facing camera and sensor cable sits to the left of where the earpiece assembly was and lines the top of the device. We need to remove it.
  2. Carefully lift it up but notice the kink in the cable underneath the front-facing camera. The noise canceling mic is pushed into the display assembly. Pop it out carefully.
  3. The rest of the cable is only held in with a tiny bit of adhesive. Carefully peel it back to finish removing the cable from the display assembly.

Remove the Home button assembly

  1. Remove the two screws on either side of the Home button assembly using your #00 Phillips screwdriver.
  2. Start lifting the Home button shield starting on the left side but don't pull completely up yet.
  3. On the right hand side you'll see a contact that's stuck to the display assembly that runs on the Home button shield. Use your finger or pry tool to carefully break the adhesive.
  4. Set the Home button shield aside.
  5. Now we've just got to remove the actual Home button. Simply push the Home button up from the front of the assembly and use your pry tool or a metal spatula to loosen the gasket on the back side. The Home button should come free pretty easily.

Transfer the removed components to the new iPhone 5 display assembly

Now that we've removed everything from the old assembly, we can transfer it to the new, unbroken assembly. In order to do this, just follow the above directions in reverse order or refer to our video where we'll walk you through readying the new assembly.

Once you've finished readying the new assembly, continue on.

Replace the iPhone 5 display assembly

  1. Start by securing the three cables back to the logic board.
  2. Replace the logic board shield cover over the cables and secure it with the three screws we originally removed using your #00 Phillips screwdriver.
  3. There are plastic clips that run along the top of the display assembly like you can see below. These need to sit underneath the inside of the frame.
  4. Starting from the top make sure you slide the clips in place and carefully work your way around the edges of the display applying even pressure to snap the display into place.

Replace the dock connector screws

Use your security screwdriver to replace the two screws on either side of the Lightning connector port.

And ...done!

Now that you've finished reassembling your iPhone 5 you can go ahead and turn it back on by pressing and holding down the power button until you see the Apple logo.

If all went well, your iPhone should boot up just fine. Make sure to test the new replacement for dead spots and check the display quality to make sure there are no dead pixels or discoloration. Since you did have to transfer components that control brightness, sound, and the proximity sensor - it's always a good idea to test those functions too so you know you transferred all the components over correctly.

Thanks again to The Pod Drop for all their help. If you don't feel comfortable repairing your own iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, check them out. There are many reputable repair shops that can do it for you, and many times, even offer you a warranty on the repair for far cheaper than what a replacement iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch would cost.

Want to know how to perform another type of iPhone repair or modification? Send me suggestions to ally@imore.com.

(AP) ? Joe Biden may just be the perfect pitchman for the senior vote.

Seeing Medicare as a window to gain new support, President Barack Obama's campaign dispatched the vice president to two sprawling Florida retirement communities Friday, hoping a white-haired 69-year-old running mate will be able to stir enthusiasm among seniors in Democrat-rich South Florida and tip the scales for the state's 29 electoral votes.

"It makes sense," says Charles Zeldon, a Nova Southeastern University expert on politics and voting. "He is one of them."

Well, at least closer than Obama, a generation younger.

That may give Biden an edge in helping the president chip into Republican Mitt Romney's lead among senior citizens, a key voting bloc not only in Florida but other battleground states such as Iowa and Ohio. The Democratic campaign doesn't expect to win the majority of seniors, but hopes that lowering Romney's totals could make the difference in close states.

Biden has spent much of the campaign trying to shore up support among white, working class voters, another group where he has a more natural connection than Obama. He's aiming to use his same affable, plain-spoken style to persuade older voters to back Obama.

He stopped by a local deli later Friday, where he greeted a man who informed him he had once shaken the hand of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

"I'm shaking a heckuva hand," Biden announced. The man identified himself to reporters as Seymour Maiman, 85, of Ft. Lauderdale.

Biden hit all the expected notes before a crowd of about 850 at Century Village in Boca Raton, a popular campaign stop for Democrats. He spoke of Obama as a defender of popular entitlement programs like Medicare, and portrayed the plans of Mitt Romney and running mate Rep. Paul Ryan as harmful to seniors and their families.

"What they don't tell you, what they really don't want to talk about, is how they'd fundamentally change Medicare," Biden said. "They'd turn it into a voucher program."

When it comes to Medicare, the Republicans say the Democrats have it backward.

Ryan, speaking to an AARP conference last week, declared, "The first step to a stronger Medicare is to repeal Obamacare because it represents the worst of both worlds. It weakens Medicare for today's seniors and puts it at risk for the next generation."

"Who are you going to believe?" Biden asked on Friday after unleashing a barrage of criticism of Republican plans.

Ryan's Medicare proposals have been a frequent target for Democrats, but Biden went further, saying a vote for the GOP would also lead to hundreds of dollars in tax increases on seniors' Social Security benefits.

"They cannot possibly continue and add to the tax cuts for the super wealthy unless they eviscerate the rest of the budget," he said.

Again, the Romney camp said, Biden had it exactly wrong.

"Vice President Biden is using Social Security to fabricate the Obama campaign's latest false attacks," said spokesman Ryan Williams.

Inside the Century Village clubhouse, a Democratic-friendly but sometimes cantankerous crowd didn't muffle any complaints. "We can't hear you!" some shouted when the volume was too low. "Sit down!" when their view was obstructed. And, at least once, "This music is awful!"

But Biden was met with loud applause and beaming faces.

"I'm a Joe fan! I'm a Joe fan!" said Judy Cloutier, 66, who came to hear Biden speak. "He's such a down-to-earth man. He's like salt of the earth."

Dot Tillett, 67, said Biden was the right running mate for Obama, and a good choice to send to talk to seniors. "He's a perfect complement," she said. "He communicates well with people of all types. He's just that kind of guy."

Dorothy Schayes, 87, was less enthusiastic about the vice president, calling him "a joke." But deeply behind Obama, she hoped others were paying attention to the Medicare debate, which she said spurred concern for her 16-year-old granddaughter.

"I think there's trouble for her," she said. "So he needs another term."

At the deli later, the vice president also made a detailed sales pitch to a customer who had questions about Obama's health care overhaul.

"You will be able to get better health care than you get now in terms of cost for a lot less money," Biden told Steve Grossman, 39.

Younger people also are being enlisted by the Democrats in going after the elderly. The Obama campaign announced a new e-card effort asking young supporters to send messages to their parents and grandparents telling them their Social Security and other benefits are at risk under Republican plans.

Seniors, like people in most demographics, are largely decided on who they'll vote for in the election. So making sure supporters turn out at the polls is important for both campaigns. Nationally, the 65+ population votes at a higher rate than any other age group.

Florida has a higher proportion of people 65 and older than any other state, and its total population of nearly 3.3 million seniors is second only to California. An estimated 68 percent of seniors in Florida voted in the 2008 presidential election.

A national Associated Press-GfK poll earlier this month found 52 percent of seniors supported Romney compared to 41 percent for Obama. But Democrats have sought gains among seniors by criticizing Romney's plan for Medicare, and a Pew poll released last week showed older voters who rate Medicare as a very important issue supported Obama by a substantial margin.

Zeldon said the resurgence of the Medicare issue has given an opportunity to Obama with older voters.

"He sees them as a vulnerable population for the Republicans," Zeldon said. "When they raised the issue of Medicare, they gave the Democrats a gift, because it allows them to give their ideas about Medicare and it's an easier sell."

Calif. signs bills to boost social network privacy

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a pair of privacy bills making it illegal for employers and colleges to demand access to social media accounts.

Brown announced on Thursday that he signed AB1844 by Assemblywoman Nora Campos, a Democrat from San Jose. The bill prohibits employers from demanding user names and passwords from employees and job applicants.

The restriction does not apply to passwords or information used on employer-issued electronic devices.

The governor also signed SB1349 by Sen. Leland Yee, a Democrat from San Francisco. The companion bill makes it illegal for colleges and universities to demand social media user names and passwords from students and prospective students.

Brown announced the bills via Twitter, Facebook and Google Plus. He says the legislation will protect Californians from "unwarranted invasions."

U.S. travelers are going to be seeing a lot more of the 787, the lightweight jet built to reduce flier fatigue and airline fuel bills.

United this week became the first U.S. airline to get the newest Boeing plane. Flights between United hubs, including Houston and Chicago, begin Nov. 4. United joins All Nippon Airways, which starts U.S. flights on Monday, and Japan Airlines, which already flies the 787 from Boston to Tokyo.

After years of delays, Boeing Co. has begun delivering a handful of 787s every month. With more than 800 sold to airlines around the world, it will eventually be a plane that travelers encounter regularly. The 787 seats 219 passengers ? making it relatively small for a long-range plane but ideal on routes where it's tough to fill a larger 777.

Boeing claims the Dreamliner will be 20 percent more fuel efficient than comparable jets. And it promises a better travel experience, with more space, better lighting and carefully calibrated air pressure that should lead to fewer flier headaches.

United will fly its new plane from Seattle to Houston on Friday to begin getting it ready for passenger flights.

Here's what U.S. travelers should know about the 787:

WHO FLIES IT IN THE U.S.:

A small but growing number of airlines.

Japan Airlines currently flies 787s from Boston to Tokyo, and plans to add San Diego-Tokyo on December 2.

Japan's All Nippon Airways was the first airline to get a 787 a year ago, and starts flights Monday between Seattle and Tokyo's Narita airport. Flights between Narita and San Jose, Calif. begin in January.

United Airlines expects to get five 787s this year. Passengers will first see the 787 on flights between United's U.S. hubs. Then, on Jan. 3, United begins flights from Los Angeles to Tokyo. On March 31, it starts new flights from Denver to Tokyo Narita.

Among U.S. airlines, United Continental Holdings Inc. is going to have the 787 to itself for several years. Delta Air Lines Inc. has pushed its deliveries back to 2020, spokesman Anthony Black said. Around the industry, there's widespread skepticism about whether it will ever take the planes at all.

American Airlines has a commitment ? but not a signed, firm order ? for 42 of the planes, slated to begin arriving in the second half of 2014.

Chilean airline LAN plans to fly 787s from Los Angeles to Lima, Peru, but doesn't have a firm date yet.

WHAT YOU'LL NOTICE INSIDE:

Bigger windows and better air.

The 787's bigger windows let in more light, and its ceiling is 15 inches higher than in United's 767s. The air is less dry than on other planes, and the cabin is pressurized to a lower altitude. That will make the air inside feel closer to the air on the ground.

Ray Neidl, an airline analyst for Maxim Group, said he thinks this will be the first plane since the 40-year-old 747 that passengers will go out of their way to fly on.

"People are going to feel a lot more comfortable at the end of a long trip than they would feel on a normal airplane," giving them a reason to seek it out, he said.

United's 787 seats 219 passengers, including 70 in what it calls "Economy Plus." That's a sort of high-end coach seat that has three more inches of legroom, and other perks.

That's a significant number of Economy Plus seats, said Tim Winship who runs frequentflier.com. But considering the long flights the 787 will be making, United appears to be betting that passengers will pay up (or use frequent flier miles) to get those seats.

For most passengers, 787 or 777 are just numbers. All that really matters is their personal space on board. And the best measure of that space is the seat pitch, or the distance between seats.

By the standard, United's 787 lands in the middle of the pack. United's pitch will be 32 inches in coach, which is roughly comparable to planes that travelers might encounter on other airlines. United and American's 777s have 31 inches of pitch, according to seatguru.com, although American's 767s have 33 to 34 inches. Delta's 767s have 31 to 32 inches, according to the website.

The 32 inches on United's 787 is "pretty much the standard for entry-level coach seating," Winship said. "It's certainly not enough to surprise or delight long-haul flyers."

Use Feature Article Writing to Sell Technology - Freelance Technical ...

Feature article writing can be an important tool in your technical copywriting toolbox. Let?s see how.

The most important point to remember about writing feature articles is that you can place an article about a product or service directly in front of the customer. Moreover, you do this using trade magazines that your company?s customers read and trust.

Magazine Articles are About Trust

Trust is really what feature article writing is all about. We have all grown up reading newspapers and magazines. Moreover, generally speaking, we believe what we read in them.

That?s why editorial advertising exists. You have no doubt seen editorial advertisements in newspapers or magazines. They are ads that look like they could be regular news articles except for one thing: the word ?Advertisement? plainly printed above the copy.

No matter. People still read them and place a bit more credence in them just because of their format. Strange but true!

That?s why feature articles are so important. There is no word ?Advertisement? in plain view. What people see is a factual and well-written article in a magazine that they trust for news and information about their industry.

So they are very receptive to what your article says about how your product or service works or how it can help with a problem. This is especially true if they have that same problem!

There is no need to exaggerate about how your product or service solved a problem that was previously unsolvable (unless it?s true!). The simple fact that there is an article about your product/service in a trusted publication provides tremendous credibility. That?s the power of feature article writing.

How to Get a Feature Article Published

Follow these basic steps to success with feature article writing:

First, determine your subject. It must be of interest to your customers. What problem can your article help them solve? Is there a customer who your product/service has helped and whose story you can tell?

Determine what magazine you want your article published in. If you are not sure, there are a number of directories on the web that list trade magazines. You can easily search by industry.

If you are familiar with the magazine, you have a good idea of what kind of articles they publish. If you aren?t familiar, locate several issues and carefully examine their content to see:

  • What are the topics that are typically covered?
  • What types of questions do the articles answer?
  • What is the typical article length?
  • Are there many pictures?
  • Who are the authorities that the author quotes to answer the questions that the article raises?
  • Who are the authors, business people, or freelance writers?
  • Who advertises?

A thorough examination will tell you if the magazine is a good fit for what you are considering.

When you find a magazine that you are interested in, look at their web site for writer?s guidelines. These guidelines will often provide specific do?s and don?ts for getting published in the magazine. If you cannot easily find the guidelines, email the managing editor and ask for them.

The Query Letter

The next step is the query letter where you propose your story idea. This is typically somewhat formal and no more than one page in length. This is where you show that your idea offers value to the magazine?s readers. You will do this with a lead paragraph in your query that could be the lead for your article.

Then you will describe what topics you will cover, suggest a possible title, and talk about who you will be interviewing for source material and for quotes in the article. You will also mention your plans for pictures or illustrations. In addition, you will introduce yourself and say why you are qualified to write this article.

Nowadays, it is possible to query by email. I prefer that way because it is cheaper and faster. Most magazines will let you know if they accept email queries. If they do, remember to maintain the same professional writing approach you would take if you actually sent a letter through the mail.

Being a technical writer or a marketing person doesn?t gain any extra points with editors. You still have to produce a well-written query and then deliver a professionally written article. Just like you, trade magazines are in business to serve their customers.

You may find that you enjoy feature article writing. In that event, not only will your company benefit, but you will too as your broaden your writing horizons.

Presidential campaign is nice, and then again not

(AP) ? In a split-screen race for the presidency, Republican Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama were on their best campaign behavior in public Tuesday, all the while slashing away at each other in paid television ads.

In separate appearances in New York, they swapped criticism on foreign policy. But they did it politely, without mentioning each other by name.

Romney found fault with Obama's approach to education, but did so after paying a public compliment to Arne Duncan, who has the administration's Cabinet portfolio for the subject.

There was an outbreak of self-deprecating humor from Romney, as well, as he received a glowing introduction from former President Bill Clinton before speaking to the annual Clinton Global Initiative.

"If there's one thing we've learned this election season, it's that a few words from Bill Clinton can do any man a lot of good," joked the Republican candidate for the White House, referring to the former' president's strong speech on Obama's behalf at the Democratic National Convention earlier this month.

"All I got to do now is wait a few days for that bounce to happen," Romney quipped.

Joking or not, it was as close as the Republican challenger has come to publicly acknowledging recent polls showing Obama moving ahead in several battleground states and gaining ground in national surveys.

Cut to the television ads, and the political reality both campaigns are trying to create for voters in battleground states.

Of the five commercials the Obama campaign says it is airing most frequently, one accuses Romney and running mate Paul Ryan of backing a plan for Medicare that would raise out-of-pocket costs for seniors. Another says the Republican challenger favors tax cuts for millionaires that could be paid for by reducing existing tax breaks for education expenses.

A third says Obama, not Romney, has pushed back against China's unfair trade policies. A fourth asserts that part of Romney's personal fortune is invested in China and says he's never stood up to the country. "All he's done is send them our jobs," it says.

The Romney campaign listed six ads currently airing, four of which criticize Obama.

"Dear Daughter. Welcome to America," says the announcer in a commercial that shows a young baby. "Your share of Obama's debt is over $50,000."

Two spots feature coal miners accusing the administration of pursuing policies that go after their industry. "Obama said he was going to bankrupt any new power plants that opened up ... He's keeping his promise," says a miner shown in one. "I've got two young grandsons. I'm scared for their futures, let alone mine."

A fourth accuses Obama of failing to "stand up to China" and asserts, "His policies cost us 2 million jobs."

In the world not made up of television commercials, one report released during the day showed consumer confidence climbing to the highest level since February. A second report said home prices increased in July as sales rose and foreclosures fell.

Taken together, that amounted to encouraging news for the president, given that the slow-growing economy and 8.1 percent national unemployment are the public's top issues in the race for the White House.

Whatever the economic news itself, voters increasingly say the country is heading in the right direction. In an Associated Press-GfK poll taken at mid-month, 48 percent of registered voters said they expect the economy to improve in the next 12 months, compared to only 41 percent who said so in a survey in August.

Additionally, 41 percent of registered voters said in this month's poll that the nation is heading in the right direction, up from 34 percent saying the same in August.

Obama's handling of the economy, still tepid, is better than it has been. The latest AP-GfK poll finds 48 percent of registered voters approve of the president's handling of the economy, while 49 percent disapprove. In June, 56 percent disapproved and 43 percent approved.

Romney spoke first during the day, speaking to Clinton's organization.

He said the death of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens in Libya two weeks ago was caused by a terrorist attack, something Obama has refrained from saying.

"Many Americans are troubled by the developments in the Middle East," Romney said. "Syria has witnessed the killings of tens of thousands of people. The president of Egypt is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. ... And Iran is moving toward nuclear weapons capability.

"We feel that we are at the mercy of events, rather than shaping events," he added.

Although Romney did not overtly criticize Obama's foreign policy in the speech, as he had on Monday, his words took on a sharper edge when he suggested to CNN during an interview that the White House had misled the American people by not characterizing the violence in Libya as a terrorist attack.

"The White House's failure to acknowledge that the assassination of our ambassador was a terrorist attack, a terrorist event, suggests that they are trying to paper over the seriousness of what's happening in the Middle East," Romney said.

In his New York speech, Romney said that if he is elected, he will create "prosperity pacts" in the Middle East, private-public partnerships designed to remove barriers to free markets around the region. He said developing countries would receive U.S. assistance "focused on developing the institutions of liberty, the rule of law and property rights."

Obama, in a speech later in the morning to the U.N. General Assembly, said the recent assaults on U.S. citizens in Libya "were attacks on America" and called on world leaders to join in confronting the root causes of the rage across the Muslim world.

But in a slap at Romney, Obama said "let us remember that this is a season of progress" in the Arab World, where autocratic leaders have been deposed in several countries.

In another jab, he said, "Among Israelis and Palestinians, the future must not belong to those who turn their backs on peace."

Obama didn't mention it, but Romney says on a videotape that recently came to light that "the Palestinians have no interest whatsoever in establishing peace. The pathway to peace is almost unthinkable to accomplish."

Google Play hits 25 billion app downloads, offers select 25-cent titles this week

Google Play crossed a rather significant milestone this morning: something to the tune of 25 billion app downloads. While the accomplishment is weighty enough on its own -- especially given that the store also offers books, music and movies, which aren't included in this tally -- Google is celebrating in symbolic style with a number of apps and games for sale at just $0.25 over the next five days. Among the mix of discounted titles, you'll find publishers such as Gameloft, Electronic Arts, Rovio, Runtastic and Full Fat. Not to stop there, shoppers will also discover a curated collection of 25 must-own movies, 25 banned books, 25 albums that changed the world and 25 top-selling magazines.

With today's announcement, it was revealed that 675,000 apps and games now live in Google Play -- a healthy increase when compared to 600,000 titles and 20 billion installs just three months ago. As you might expect, Apple still claims the largest selection with 700,000 titles in its App Store, although with such a thin separation between the two, we may see Google Play eclipse its rival in short order.

Can a Flashy New Redesign Make Myspace Cool Again? [Video]

Myspace, that ancient social networking dinosaur, is back with a new coat of paint. And get ready for this: it looks kind of neat. The new format has some pretty clear Pinterest and Tumblr influence, and also looks like it'll be doubling down on the music aspect of the Myspace world, maybe giving Spotify's social aspects a little competition. Maybe. More »
