NYU-Poly Study Highlights Disconnect Between BYOD and Mobile ...

A recent study by AT&T and the Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly) has discovered that while a majority of small businesses allow the use of mobile devices (phones and tablets), very few of them are taking any proactive measures when it comes to device security.

The study focused on 623 small business owners and employees who responded to an online survey in September. According to the results, 90% of the respondents allow employee access to company email via mobile devices, and 41% allow access to company data (files). Moreover, 83% of them allow personal devices to be used for work.

However, only 65% expressed concern when it came to information and data security of wireless devices, and less than 29% of the respondents confirmed that AV was being used on smartphones in the office. In addition, while 82% of the respondents have taken steps to protect laptops, only 32% are protecting smartphones (AV, and other MDM protection), and only 39% are protecting tablets. Of the majority not taking steps to protect these mobile devices, fewer than half (42%) have plans to increase security.

"There is a troubling disconnect between business owners who want to keep data safe and the necessary steps to protect it," said Ed Amoroso, Chief Security Officer, AT&T.

"With more employees using mobile devices, especially personal devices, business data is increasingly vulnerable to cyber threats. Protecting critical information can be easy and affordable, and small businesses need to recognize the reality of today's environment...?

In addition to mobile security questions, the survey also asked business owners whether their business had experienced a cyber or online security incident. Nearly four in 10 (37%) reported being the victim of a security breach, such as a virus, mobile malware or phishing, with 21 percent being victimized within the last two years.

"Small businesses need to better understand their risk profile," said Nair Memon, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and founding director of The Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Security and Privacy (CRISSP) at NYU-Poly.

"This means treating every device that touches your network, from laptops to smartphones, as vulnerabilities and ensuring that security is built into the equation at every level."

Additional findings from the study can be found here.

Corning may make job cuts as part of cost cuts

NEW YORK (AP) ? Corning said Wednesday that it will likely cut costs, which may include "modest" job cuts, to support profit in a weakening economy.

It's the latest manufacturer to warn that the slowing global growth is hurting its business. Weaker global growth hurt Corning's telecommunications and environmental technologies divisions, but the company said sales of its super-strong Gorilla glass, used in tablets, TVs and other devices, were much better than expected.

The glass and ceramics maker's stock slid 8.4 percent, or $1.13, to $12.28 in midday trading Wednesday.

The Corning, N.Y., company's third-quarter net income dropped 36 percent to $521 million, or 35 cents per share, from $811 million, or 51 cents per share, a year ago. Adjusted profit was 34 cents per share.

Revenue fell 2 percent to $2.04 billion in the July-September quarter.

Despite declines, profit and revenue still topped Wall Street expectations.

""The weakening economy is affecting sales in many of our businesses, with several not achieving the growth expectations we set for the year," said Corning Inc. CFO James Flaws. Higher expenses also hurt profit.

The company expects economic woes will continue next year, and that it will probably have to cut costs to grow profits. Savings will probably come from scaling back project spending, capital expenditures and from job cuts.

No decisions have been made on where the job cuts would be, said Corning spokesman Dan Collins. The company has operations in the U.S., China and other Asian countries, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.

The company expects to take a charge of up to $50 million in the current quarter to cover the cuts.

In the July-September quarter, price declines for LCD glass weighed on Corning's display technologies division, the company's largest by revenue, where sales dropped 6 percent. The company expects glass volumes may drop further in the current quarter.

Lower North American sales, due to the end of the U.S. government's stimulus spending and project delays, and faltering demand in Europe dragged revenue for the telecom division down 7 percent.

Sales in the division that includes Gorilla glass shot up 21 percent.

Declining demand for trucks hurt the company's environment technologies unit, whose products include diesel filters and emissions products for autos. Sales dropped 6 percent.

CIO Insights: Canadian Residential Real Estate ? The Next Bubble ...

Mark Kopinski

Mark Kopinski, Chief Investment Officer, Global and Non-U.S. Equity

In our increasingly interconnected world, weakness in one market can quickly reverberate throughout the global economy. As events of the past five years have clearly demonstrated, investors must be vigilant for new stresses. Canada has been a relative isle of stability in recent years, and its real estate market has remained robust even after others have collapsed. But therein may lay a problem.

A Bull Market for Canadian Real Estate

In the past decade, low interest rates combined with high demand for housing and investment properties have caused Canadian residential real estate prices to almost double, far outstripping household income. As property values have grown, Canadians have further increased their debt through home equity loans. Canadian household debt relative to disposable income rose to a record this year, exceeding 150%. Recent estimates are that the big six Canadian banks have over CAD$700 billion in Canadian mortgage exposure and another CAD$180 billion in home-equity loan exposure. The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has insured about CAD$560 billion of the mortgage market which amounts to about a third of Canadian gross domestic product (GDP).1

Is a Correction Coming?

Many fear that Canadian residential real estate prices are due for a correction. Estimates range from a fall of 10-30%. Overbuilding in some cities, slowing income growth, and higher interest rates are triggers that could cause real estate prices to fall. Due to the high level of household debt in Canada, a fall in property values could have a reverse wealth effect in the world?s 10th largest economy. The Bank of Canada has repeatedly warned that interest rates will increase, which will increase costs to highly leveraged borrowers and potentially lead to defaults and foreclosures. If the CMHC lacks sufficient assets to cover these losses, the Canadian taxpayer will have to take up the slack, adding further pressure on the economy.

Fundamental Differences

While this situation is potentially serious, there are fundamental differences between Canada?s real estate market and those that collapsed in the United States, Ireland, and Spain. First, national statistics for Canadian home ownership affordability are skewed by extreme market conditions in the city of Vancouver, British Columbia, which continues to be the least affordable city in Canada. Reports indicate that many new buyers in Vancouver are not highly levered Canadians but Chinese with plenty of cash looking for second homes and investment properties. As high as Vancouver prices have become, they are still very attractive relative to similar properties in Asia. And while affordability has deteriorated in other areas of Canada, nationally it is still below the peaks reached during the Canadian housing bubble of the late 1980s.

Second, starting in 2008, the Canadian government has implemented a series of reforms to cool the housing market, including higher down payments, more stringent loan-to-value requirements, shorter payment periods, and tougher underwriting standards. Recent data shows that these measures are having the desired effect. In addition, because a greater share of mortgages in Canada have variable interest rates and not the long-term fixed rates favored in the United States, the Canadian market is more sensitive to interest rate changes and hence to Central Bank policy. Finally, unlike in many states within the United States, Canadian homeowners cannot simply walk away from their mortgages, making default a far less attractive option.

In summary, the structure of the Canadian real estate market and timely government policies that have already been implemented make a U.S.-style real estate collapse and the attendant stress on financial markets unlikely, though not impossible.

Outside group attacks Smith, boosts Casey

(AP) ? A Democratic political action committee began running TV ads in Pittsburgh on Wednesday to boost Democratic Sen. Bob Casey's reelection bid against a surprisingly strong challenge from Republican Tom Smith, a tea party favorite who has personally invested more than $16 million into the race.

The Majority PAC ad said Smith's cost-cutting agenda to eliminate the federal Department of Education would mean less money in classrooms, fewer children in Head Start and less aid for college students.

Smith's campaign responded that he would help schools by fighting to reduce the cost of the federal government and unfunded mandates, and that he has not ruled out keeping some Department of Education functions, such as Pell grants.

Casey is endorsed by the state's major newspapers in his quest for a second, six-year term. Smith is a political newcomer who made a fortune in coal mining and is tapping it to outspend Casey. Smith was on course to outspend Casey by two-to-one after July 1.

The race had long been on the backburner for the national parties in the battle for control of the U.S. Senate. Casey is a political scion, a veteran of several statewide races and popular with labor unions in a strong labor state. He had held a huge lead in early polling, but Smith burst from obscurity after blanketing the airwaves with ads.

A Quinnipiac University poll released last week showed Casey with 48 percent, versus Smith's 45 percent.

Youth Contact Sports Raise Concerns About Brain Injury | Steadman ...

Written by Liv Osby
Staff writer, Greenville News

Article

A sharp staccato whistle pierces a sunlit autumn afternoon, and Mauldin High School?s Mavericks charge across the practice field.

Sporting their trademark orange, white and brown uniforms, the players toss footballs at one another, grunting as they stretch to make a catch.

On the sidelines, coaches bark out commands as the players go through the drills in preparation for the big game Friday night.

It?s a scene played out in thousands of American towns every fall, perhaps nowhere with more fervor than in the South, where the stands are packed with spirited fans shouting for their team to take down the opponent in what can be a violent collision sport.

But on the heels of reports of depression, dementia and even suicide among former professional football players comes new research that these star athletes are nearly four times as likely as the general population to develop Alzheimer?s, ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases.

And there are growing concerns that these injuries could start in childhood during recreational and high school sports such as football, hockey and soccer.

It?s hard to miss the headlines.

Former NFL linebacker Junior Seau committed suicide last May at 43.

Former Chicago Bears defensive back Dave Duerson, who killed himself in 2011, suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE ? a condition resulting from repeated head trauma.

Other players, including former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman, have left the sport because of repeated concussions.

And the injuries keep mounting. Oakland Raiders wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey just returned to play after a concussion earlier in the season, according to USA TODAY.

Last month, after new research linking the sport to neurodegenerative diseases appeared in the journal Neurology, the National Football League donated $30 million to the National Institutes of Health for research into CTE, concussion and other disorders.

Nationwide, there are 3.8 million sports- and recreation-related concussions each year, according to the Brain Injury Association of South Carolina.

What?s more, the number is likely underestimated because some players don?t realize they have concussions and others hide their injuries to keep playing, says Dr. Kyle Cassas, a sports medicine physician at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas.

Some studies show up to one in four players suffers a concussion during the season, he says.

More than 40 percent of high school athletes return to play before they are fully recovered, says Joyce Davis, executive director of the injury association. And the number of youth athletes seen in emergency rooms for concussions doubled between 1997 and 2007.

A concussion is a traumatic injury that occurs when the brain shifts violently inside the skull, says Dr. Sandip Jain, a neurologist with Greenville Hospital System.

In the past, only injuries with loss of consciousness were considered concussions. But today, it?s known that?s not true. And subconcussive injuries are thought to be almost as dangerous, Jain says.

Back when he played high school ball, concussions weren?t even talked about, says Mauldin head football coach Doug Shaw.

?I remember vividly playing high school football ? and not getting knocked out 100 percent, but being in la-la land for a little while,? he says. ?Back then, we?d say a player got his bell rung. He?d sit out for a little while and they?d put you back in. And I went back in.?

Growing up in Pittsburgh, Jain relished Steelers games. Now when he watches, he says, he can?t help but think about the potential consequences when a player takes a hit.

?You see some of these things and think, they need to take him out of the game,? he says.

In recent years, scientists have come to think that many players suffer from CTE, a constellation of Alzheimer?s-like symptoms marked by impaired memory, personality changes, depression and dementia, as well as increased domestic violence, drug and alcohol use, and suicide, Jain says.

And while Alzheimer?s typically strikes people older than 65, CTE is seen in players a decade after retirement, or in their 40s and 50s, he says. Speed positions, such as wide receiver, running back and quarterback, are most vulnerable.

Other studies show that football players with three or more concussions have a higher risk of memory loss and mild cognitive impairment, he says.

But similar symptoms are seen in other sports as well, including soccer, hockey and boxing, Jain says, adding it?s thought Mohammed Ali may have CTE, which is also found in military personnel with head injuries.

Brain trust

CTE results from the deposit of a certain protein in the brain that leads to the breakdown and death of nerve cells, says Dr. Robert Cantu, co-director of the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at Boston University.

Center scientists have studied 130 brains, he says. More than 50 of them have come from football players, and 90 percent of them had CTE, he says. And the youngest cases have been in people 17, 18 and 21. Comparison brains from non-players do not show the damage, he says.

How many concussions does it take?

?There is no evidence of how many is too many,? says Cassas. ?But in my mind, really any is too many.?

Cantu says CTE can develop not only from concussions, but from cumulative brain trauma.

?There are cases where athletes took a lot of brain trauma over their careers, but not concussions,? he says. ?Thousands of subconcussive blows count. Total brain trauma appears to be what?s important. All the violent shaking that doesn?t necessarily lead to concussion can produce CTE as well.?

Simply put, the pounding that players? bodies take can also damage their brains, Jain says.

?Football players are known to have knee problems ? chronic arthritic conditions, and back problems because of all the stress they?re putting their bodies through,? he says. ?Well, they?re putting their heads through the same stress and for that reason, we have to expect that the brain will suffer somewhat from that.?

And because the brain isn?t fully developed in a middle school or high school student, he says, it takes longer to heal.

Cantu says current diagnostic techniques are inadequate. Center researchers are looking for imaging methods, exams and biomarkers, such as a blood test, that will tell doctors when someone?s had a concussion, when it?s healed and when he?s headed for CTE.

Meanwhile, he says, more needs to be done to protect young athletes.

Safety first

Sonnie Freeman, a devoted fan who played football for Southside High as a teen, attends as many of his son?s practices and games as he can.

?I love football, and I try to keep an eye on him a little bit,? he says of 17-year-old Charles, a Mauldin Maverick.

But he?s not blind to the potential dangers associated with the sport, from broken bones to concussions.

?Jim McMahon ? he?s doing real bad right now,? Freeman says of the 53-year-old former Chicago Bears quarterback who?s suffering from early dementia. ?He took some real bad hits.?

Nonetheless, he?s fine letting Charles, a defensive tackle, on the field because of precautions taken to safeguard his health.

?I feel real comfortable letting him play,? he says. ?These trainers out here, they?re on top of things. And you don?t touch the field until you pass the test.?

In Greenville County, high school rules forbid players from leading with the helmet or face mask, says Bill Utsey, the district?s athletic director. Still, he says, there are accidental hits.

An athlete suspected of having a concussion is kept off the field until he can be medically evaluated, Cassas says. And trainers use software called IMPACT ? which assesses memory, reaction time and other brain functions ? to help determine whether a player has had a concussion and when he can return to play.

Certified athletic trainers, who attend every practice and game, watch for physical and cognitive signs of concussion, says John Thorpe, a trainer and manager for Steadman Hawkins Sports Medicine.

?It used to be losing consciousness,? he says. ?Nowadays we realize it?s ? lesser injuries too.?

Still, he says, there are no fast rules about how many concussions a player can sustain before he is pulled from the sport.

?It?s completely subjective and individual,? Thorpe says.

In the year ending Sept. 30, trainers evaluated 752 of the district?s 14,133 athletes for concussion. Thorpe says the number confirmed is unknown.

At his practice at Children?s Hospital of the King?s Daughters in Norfolk, Va., sports medicine medical director Dr. Joel Brenner sees at least four new concussions a day in student-athletes from all sports, ranging from football to cheerleading.

?I saw a 13-year-old last week who?d had three concussions over the past two years, but I?ve had others with three in a six-month time span,? says Brenner, who also chairs the American Academy of Pediatrics? council on sports medicine and fitness.

?But do we really know what these kids are going to be like 10, 15 or 20 years down the road? Especially those who?ve had multiple concussions,? he says. ?We don?t know.?

Limited contact

In August, Brenner says, Pop Warner programs nationwide adopted new guidelines limiting contact during practices. While that?s an important advance, he says, it won?t eliminate concussions. And it hasn?t filtered down to all high school and recreational leagues.

Utsey says a clinic on the long-term effects of repeated concussions was recently held for all coaches. And Shaw, who says there are more head injuries at all levels today because players are bigger and faster, notes coaches also take an online course on concussions.

Along with regular strength training, he says, there?s emphasis on building neck muscles to help protect the head. Players are properly fitted with the best equipment and taught optimal ways to tackle, he says. And they?re warned about concussions.

?But sometimes kids can get concussions just because they get hit the wrong way,? Shaw says. ?Football is a collision sport. And anybody could get hurt on any given play probably. But there are less injuries because they play like they do.?

Decisions about returning to play are left to the doctors, he says.

Greenville County School Board members Roger Meek and Chuck Saylors say they haven?t seen a groundswell of concern from parents about head injuries or the mounting research. But they add the district?s athletic departments are always mindful that safety is the top priority.

And concussions are taken more seriously than ever before, says Easley High School head football coach Chad Smith. Athletes use state-of-the-art equipment and are taught the proper way to block and tackle.

?As a parent of four boys myself, I think it?s a good thing we?re being cautious,? he says. ?If our trainer thinks they have a concussion, they?re out.?

And they can?t return until they?ve gone a week without symptoms, he says.

So far this season, he says, one player had to sit out a game because of concussion. A player who has two, he says, is probably out for the season.

?The kids? safety is always first at Easley,? Smith says.

Cassas says that while helmets have been designed to diffuse the blow, they can?t prevent concussions. In fact, he adds, there were probably fewer concussions when players wore leather helmets because they weren?t using their heads the way they do now.

Cantu says helmets can?t protect against the most damaging hits, those that cause a swiveling of the head on the neck.

?And that?s what you get in football,? he says.

All in the game

Other factors come into play as well.

Because a concussion can also be caused by a blow to the side of the face or the body and result from a collision or by an athlete?s head hitting the ground, they?re difficult to prevent, Cassas says.

?You can?t prevent collisions because that?s part of the game,? he says.

And while the stakes can include multimillion dollar contracts at the pro level, there are teammates, coaches and sometimes pressure from parents and potential scholarships to consider at the high school level, he says.

So players may conceal their injuries, rolling the dice that they won?t suffer another, potentially life-altering injury.

Both Cassas and Jain say multiple concussions, which are more likely to lead to long-term damage, are cause for a serious discussion about the potential consequences and how they may affect a child?s future.

And the Academy recommends withdrawal from contact sports for any athlete who?s sustained multiple concussions or had post-concussive symptoms for more than three months.

Cantu says more also should be done to reduce the number of subconcussive impacts, such as abandoning tackle football, heading in soccer and full-body checking in ice hockey in kids younger than 14.

?We know from instrumented helmets that youngsters at the high school level are often receiving impacts at 20 times the force of gravity or greater, many over 1,000 of them over the course of a season,? he says.

Davis says South Carolina needs a concussion law to set uniform standards for identification and treatment of concussions and govern return to play because schools around the state do things differently.

Forty states already have such a law, she says.

Bills that would set minimum guidelines were introduced last year by Sen. Mike Fair of Greenville and Rep. Peter McCoy of Charleston, Davis said. But neither advanced in a session crowded with budget and ballot issues.

Fair says it?s important to have a medically qualified individual at all games and to have athletes medically cleared before playing again. He plans to prefile his bill again in December.

?This will ensure that no child will go back to play if they exhibit concussive symptoms,? says Davis, ?and ? a student believed to be concussed must be evaluated by an appropriate health care provider.?

Head start

A concussion law would give athletic directors another tool to protect students, says Thorpe, adding that they sometimes deal with parents, coaches and even players who want to continue after a head injury.

?We have some that have aspirations of a scholarship or beyond, talking about their son?s career who?s 14 years old,? he says. ?But we?re there for the safety of the kid ? not for a winning season. We?re more concerned about their son?s cognitive ability and life. So we will err on the side of caution.?

Cantu says he fears there?s a ?silent epidemic? of people whose career and life paths have been stunted by head traumas.

?It?s possible that many individuals who have received trauma have been set back on their trajectory,? he says, ?but we don?t know about it.?

Jain says from a pure numbers standpoint, the chances of not suffering a serious injury are better than sustaining one. But with all the emerging research, he says, many parents will have to face some tough choices.

Now, he says, along with broken bones, damaged knees and hurt shoulders, they need to consider a head injury that can alter the course of their child?s life.

Freeman says his main concern is that his son, who?s never had a concussion, never get one. But he?s confident the coaches and trainers are doing all they can to ensure player safety, both in proper training and in watching for injuries.

And he?s told Charles to speak up if he?s hurt because his education and his future are paramount.

?These are nothing but kids out here,? he says, gesturing toward the field. ?And a kid can get a concussion on Friday night and come Saturday, that one little injury can turn out to be something critical.?

Romney slams Obama's Mideast 'apology tour'

President Obama was asked by debate moderator Bob Schieffer to explain "what's the deal," with a rumored agreement between the U.S. and Iran to hold one-on-one negotiations over Iran's nuclear program after the U.S. election in November.

"Those are reports in a newspaper. They are not true," Obama said.

"They have the opportunity re-enter the community of nations and we would welcome that," Obama continued. "The deal we'll accept that they end their nuclear program."

In his sharpest words of the debate so far, Romney accused the president of empowering dictators and despots around the world.

"The president began what I would call an apology tour, going to the Middle East and blaming America," Romney said. "I think when the president said he was going to create daylight between ourselves and Israel, they noticed that."

"Nothing Governor Romney has said just now is true," Obama shot back. "The strength we've shown in Iran is the way that we've been able to organize the world."

"We're four years closer to a nuclear Iran," Romney countered. "The reason I call it an apology tour is because you went to the Middle East," Romney said. "You skipped Israel and they noticed that."

The History Of Retro Dresses: From The 1950?s To The 80?s

By Anonymous on Oct 19, 2012 05:01 pm

It?s cliche, but it?s cliche with a timeless meaning: What?s old is new again, and this saying certainly has a lot of stock when it comes to retro dresses and clothing. Mod clothing from several eras ago has a timelessness to them that?s hard to describe. They?re stylish, hip, and original in the sense that if you really want to go against the grain, wearing clothes your parents or grandparents haven?t worn since their teens may do the trick.

Google to Launch New Devices, Android 4.2 at Oct. 29 Event [REPORT]

Google will unveil several new devices and a software update at its scheduled Oct. 29 press event, according to a company video leaked from an all-hands meeting.

[More from Mashable: iPad Mini: All the Rumors]

The Next Web is reporting Google has distributed an internal video that details and confirms speculations about what might be revealed at the upcoming event.

The video reportedly discusses the launch of a 32GB version of the Nexus 7 tablet, as well as one with 3G support. It also indicates Google is working with manufacturer Samsung to release a 10-inch tablet called "Nexus 10" that will run Android 4.2 ("Key Lime Pie"), and a Nexus smartphone manufactured by LG.

[More from Mashable: Google?s Disappointing Third Quarter [Infographic]]

Meanwhile, the new Android 4.2 mobile operating system will include a panoramic camera option and "tablet sharing" capabilities, which would allow more than one user to access the device with his own set of email and apps -- similar to how a family or business can switch between user settings on a Windows computer.

Earlier this week, Google sent invitations to the press for an Android event to be held in New York City. Although the invitation didn't detail what might occur, the tagline -- "the playground is open" -- suggests it will have to do with Google Play, the company's newly-rebranded Andriod Market.

The news came as Microsoft prepares for its Windows Phone 8 launch event, which will also be held on Oct. 29 -- and Apple gears up to unveil its rumored 7.85-inch iPad on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

Google's new Samsung tablet is reportedly being filed under the name "Codename Manta." The device is expected to have a 2560?1600 pixel resolution and 300ppi, which is greater than the iPad's 264ppi.

Meanwhile, the 4.7-inch Nexus smartphone manufactured by LG is said to tout a quad-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm APQ8064 Snapdragon processor, a 1280x768 display, 2GB of RAM and 16GB storage.

Pimples at the polls: Argentina tries to lower voting age to 16

The Senate of the South American nation voted this week to allow 16- and 17-year-olds to cast ballots at the polls, generating outcry from political opponents of President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, who is widely supported by a growing youth movement, which we reported about here. Critics say that, in appealing to youths, President Kirchner is trying to bolster her party ahead of October 2013 legislative elections.

The president?s supporters, however, say the goal is to strengthen democracy. ?It is young people who create the counterculture, who can see reality from another point of view, and who question all of their society?s ideas and prejudices,? Elena Corregido, a ruling party senator and co-author of the bill, told the radio show The World. ?So we by no means think that they?ll be pulled along like cattle to the market.?

If the bill, which now goes to the lower house, becomes law, Argentina would join Brazil, Nicaragua, and Ecuador in Latin America, as well as Austria, in setting 16 as the minimum voting age. The vast majority of countries in the world today, as seen in this chart of voter ages globally, have placed the minimum voting age at 18. (In some countries, like Saudi Arabia, citizens have to wait until they?re 21 to cast a ballot.)

Those against the move in Argentina do not just cite unfair politics. In opinion pieces and comments to the local media, critics are arguing that youths are too easily manipulated and not sufficiently educated or mature enough to participate in the task as important as electing a nation?s president.

Should US follow suit?

Orionid meteor show reaches its climax

It has been 26 years since Halley's Comet last passed through the inner solar system ? but this weekend, skywatchers have a chance to see leftover bits of the comet light up the night sky in the Orionid meteor shower.

The Orionids can best be described as a junior version of the famous Perseid meteor shower and is scheduled to reach its maximum before sunrise on Sunday morning. Patient night sky observers with clear, dark skies could see dozens of meteors an hour, according to NASA.

This will be an excellent year to look for the Orionids, since the moon will set around 11 p.m. local time on Saturday night and will not be a hindrance at all; so the sky will be dark for prospective meteor watchers right on through the first light of dawn on Sunday. [Photos: Orionid Meteor Shower of 2012]

The orbit of Halley's Comet closely approaches the Earth's orbit at two places. One point is in the early part of May producing a meteor display known as the Eta Aquarids.

The other point comes in the middle to latter part of October, producing the Orionids.

How to watch
This weekend's meteor shower is known as ?Orionids? because the meteors seem to fan out from a region to the north of well-known Orion constellation's second brightest star: the ruddy Betelgeuse.

Currently, Orion appears ahead of us in our journey around the sun, and has not completely risen above the eastern horizon until after 11 p.m. local daylight time. At its best several hours later, at around 5 a.m. ? Orion will be highest in the sky toward the south ? Orionids typically produce around 20 to 25 meteors per hour under a clear, dark sky.

Typically, Orionid meteors are dim and not well seen from urban locations, so we suggest that you find a safe rural location to see the best Orionid activity. Actually, Orionid activity started to increase noticeably on Oct. 17, when they started appearing at roughly five per hour.

After peaking on the morning of Oct. 21, activity will slowly ease, dropping back to around five per hour around Oct. 25. The last few stragglers usually appear sometime in early to mid-November. [October's Best Night Sky Sights (Video)]

What to expect
The best time to see the Orionid meteor shower is anytime from about 1 or 2 a.m. local daylight time until around dawn, when the shower?s radiant (in Orion?s upraised club, just north of the bright red star, Betelgeuse) is highest above the southern horizon.

The higher the radiant, the more meteors appear all over the sky. The Orionids are one of just a handful of known meteor showers that can be observed equally well from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

The Orionids are one of the better annual meteor shower displays, producing about 15 to 20 meteors per hour at their peak. Add the five to 10 sporadic meteors that always are plunging into our atmosphere and you get a maximum of about 20 to 30 meteors per hour for a dark sky location. Most of these meteors are relatively faint, however, so any light pollution will cut the total way down.

In recent years, this shower has been rather active for a few days before and after its Oct. 21 peak. Step outside before sunrise, for instance, on Saturday or Monday mornings and if you catch sight of a meteor, there?s about a 75 percent chance that it likely originated from the nucleus of Halley?s Comet.

    4. Alpha Centauri mission by 2100?

"They are easily identified ? from their speed," David Levy and Stephen Edberg write in "Observe: Meteors," an Astronomical League manual. "At 66 kilometers (41 miles) per second, they appear as fast streaks, faster by a hair than their sisters, the Eta Aquarids of May. And like the Eta Aquarids, the brightest of family tend to leave long-lasting trains. Fireballs are possible three days after maximum."

In fact, a dazzling fireball lit up the night sky over California on Wednesday night, creating a brilliant light show and starting many witness with a loud sonic boom.

Story: Stunning shooting stars light up California sky

Recent studies have shown that about half of all the Orionids that are seen leave trails that lasted longer than other meteors of equivalent brightness.

This is undoubtedly connected in some way to the makeup of Halley?s Comet. So it is that the shooting stars that we have come to call Orionids are really an encounter with the traces of a famous visitor from the depths of space and from the dawn of creation.

Halley?s legacy
Halley's Comet takes roughly 75 years to circle the sun. But if you?re 30 years old or younger, you either have little or no memory of this famous cosmic vagabond (your next chance will come in the summer of 2061). Or maybe, if you were around back then, you didn?t see Halley at all because of light pollution or the comet's low altitude above the horizon.

That's what makes the Orionid meteor shower, and its partner the Eta Aquarids, so special: They give Earth a glimpse of Halley twice a year.

Comets are the leftovers of the day of creation, the odd bits and pieces of simple gases ? methane, ammonia, carbon dioxide and water vapor ? that went unused when the sun and its attendant planets came into their present form. All comets eventually disintegrate into meteor swarms and Halley?s is well into that process at this time.

These tiny particles ? mostly ranging in size from dust to sand grains ? remain along the original comet?s orbit, creating a ?river of rubble? in space. In the case of Halley?s comet, which has likely circled the sun many hundreds, if not thousands of times, its dirty trail of debris has been distributed more or less uniformly all along its entire orbit.

When these tiny bits of comet collide with Earth, friction with our atmosphere raises them to white heat and produces the effect popularly referred to as "shooting stars."

Meteoroids that are released into space from this cometary debris are the remnants of a comet?s nucleus. When they hit Earth's atmosphere, they flare up in bright meteors. Any pieces that reach Earth are called meteorites.

Happy anniversary to me! AW and slight vent

I don't expect anyone to remember my anniversary. We got a couple cards from ILs early on and I thought it was unusual (nice, of course; but I was really surprised).?

That said, I also live far away from my friends and family and I understand that it's hard being homesick and far away. I've also noticed that I'm much more sensitive to feeling all alone out here now that I'm pregnant. So, maybe that's part of it??

?In any event. sorry that you were disappointed and Happy Anniversary.?

Don't Just Wing It. Learn Some Great Tips For A Strong Home ...

If you notice that your toilet is clogged the first thing you should do is to try to unclog it with a plunger. There is no need to call a plumber without first trying to unclog the toilet yourself. You can typically plunge out any clog if you try a few times.

Newly updated and modern houses sell faster than outdated houses. The biggest thing that people look for in a house is the kitchen. If your kitchen is dark, drab, and outdated, then you should considered doing renovations. Kitchens are a great place to start when trying to improve your home.

If you are working with someone else on a home improvement project, make sure to have clear lines of communication. It is important that everyone be assigned a role that caters to their strengths. It is also important that all members of the team understand the role they will have in the project. Clear communication will ensure that the project is completed in a timely fashion.

Are you considering a home improvement project? Are you trying to decide whether to do the job yourself or hire it out? One thing to take in consideration is the time value of your efforts. What is the dollar value of the time that you would have put into this project, worth to you? Compare this dollar value to what it would cost to hire the work out.

Add a whole new room! If you are the adventurous type of homeowner, you may want to work on an addition to your home. An addition has many benefits, including more space, a longer project, and a lasting change. Be cautious of your building codes however, you do not want to start an addition only to find out it is illegal to continue.

Do your homework before starting to demolish. It might seem easy, even fun, to rush into a demolition and start cutting holes or ripping down walls. Always check first for electrical wires or components that are still attached. It might be too expensive to completely remove the structure, so it?s better to double check first.

Deal with maintenance issues as soon as they arrive. If you have tenants that complain of a leaky faucet, or a heater that is on the fritz, not only can they withhold rent until you have it repaired, but waiting can be more costly if further damage ensues.

When painting your bathroom, kitchen, or other area that sees lots of moisture (or kids? hands), choose a semi-gloss or high-gloss paint. Unlike flat (matte) paints, glossy surfaces are easier to wipe clean and are less likely to show spots when exposed to moisture from steamy showers or boiling pots.

Stay aware of your budget for home improvement projects. Especially after the holidays, money is tight. If you plan and budget, you can find the best prices on the materials and labor needed for your projects. In addition, you can save time by being more prepared by having materials that you?ve purchased over time ready to go when you start your project.

Have you ever began a home improvement project and it became more that you ever anticipated? One option that many other homeowners use is hiring a temporary labor service crew. If you decide to do this with your next big project, make sure that there are no language issues. There should be at least one person with the crew that can speak both your language and the language of the other workers.

When you replace old equipment during a home improvement project, always try to get the most energy-efficient replacements you can afford. In many cases, a slight extra expenditure gets you appliances or building materials, that are far more efficient than the bargain-basement options. These little extra outlays will be quickly offset by reduced energy and heating bills.

Now that you know a little bit more about home improvement, you are all set to embark on the around the house project of your choosing. Whether or not you start with something small or tackle a monster of a job is completely up to you. Either way, you?ll have the confidence you need to improve your home.

Whether it is for augmentation, liposuction, or a lift, women often go into plastic surgery without being aware of all the aspects. This book, written by a female plastic surgeon, gives an objective, knowledgeable overview of the different procedures and includes topics such as decision making, smart questions to ask, expectations, possible complications, and recovery.

Flesh Wounds: The Culture of Cosmetic SurgeryFlesh Wounds: The Culture of Cosmetic SurgeryWhen did cosmetic surgery become a common practice, the stuff of everyday conversation? In a work that combines a provocative ethnography of plastic surgery and a penetrating analysis of beauty and feminism, Virginia L. Blum searches out the social conditions and imperatives that have made ours a culture of cosmetic surgery. From diverse viewpoints, ranging from cosmetic surgery patient to feminist cultural critic, she looks into the realities and fantasies that have made physical malleability an essential part of our modern-day identity.
For a cultural practice to develop such a tenacious grip, Blum argues, it must be fed from multiple directions: some pragmatic, including the profit motive of surgeons and the increasing need to appear young on the job; some philosophical, such as the notion that a new body is something you can buy or that appearance changes your life. Flesh Wounds is an inquiry into the ideas and practices that have forged such a culture. Tying the boom in cosmetic surgery to a culture-wide trend toward celebrity, Blum explores our growing compulsion to emulate what remain for most of us two-dimensional icons. Moving between personal experiences and observations, interviews with patients and surgeons, and readings of literature and cultural moments, her book reveals the ways in which the practice of cosmetic surgery captures the condition of identity in contemporary culture.
