Keep Halloween Happy for Pets | Best Friends Veterinary Center in ...

Halloween can be an especially scary time for pets. We see many pets that become lost, injured or ill during Halloween celebrations. Here are some tips for keeping your pet safe on Halloween:

Candles:? Burning candles often attract cats and dogs. Pets are naturally curious and may knock over a burning candle, even if it?s in a jack-o-lantern. Your pet can get burned or cause a fire. So, be sure to keep burning candles out of the reach of pets. Or better yet, use electric candles instead.

Candy, Gum & Raisins:? Many pets love to try sweet treats. Unfortunately candy, gum, raisins and other treats can not only make pets sick, such treats can lead to death for cats and dogs. Even in small doses baking chocolate, dark chocolate, gum and raisins all present serious problems. Xylitol, an artificial sweetener found in sugar-free gum and sugar-free candy, is highly toxic to dogs. The same is true of raisins (and grapes). Consumption of these treats can quickly lead to organ damage and death. Candy wrappers also present a danger for pets as they can become lodged in the pet?s intestines and require surgery to remove. If your pet ingests any of these items, please contact your veterinarian immediately.

?Costumes:? If you decide to dress your pet on Halloween, make certain that the costume allows your pet to move freely, breathe easily and bark or meow without a problem. The costume should not have any dangling parts that can be torn off and swallowed. Give your pet an opportunity to become familiar with the costume, putting it on them for brief periods prior to the holiday. Or just have them wear it for a short time to take a photo. If your pet doesn?t enjoy dressing up, it?s best to let them be themselves.

?Pet Identification:? This is a good time of the year to check that your pet?s identification is up-to-date. Many pets that normally never run away, will bolt out the door when trick-or-treaters and other visitors come and go. Your pet should have up-to-date identification on them and a microchip in them. Microchips are easily injected into your pet by your veterinarian. If your pet is already microchipped, make certain that your contact information with the microchip provider is up-to-date.

Trick or Treaters: ?When pets encounter scary looking strangers on Halloween, it?s not unusual for them to become frightened. Many pets will react by trying to run away or bite the costumed trick-or-treater. It?s best to keep pets indoors on Halloween. Leave them at home when you go trick-or-treating. And when your doorbell rings, keep your pet away from the door or on a leash. If your pet is especially anxious during such busy times, talk with your veterinarian to explore options to help lessen your pet?s anxiety. ?
