Fondita de Jes?s, a nonprofit organization that helps the homeless, has developed a solar energy project and installed high efficiency lighting systems and low-energy consumption air conditioning units at a cost of $100,000, financed with American Reinvestment and Recovery Act incentives and local funding by the Puerto Rico Energy Affairs Administration

These energy saving measures the nonprofit implemented have resulted in an average $1,000 monthly saving on its electricity bill, which the organization is pumping into additional community services.

Fondita de Jes?s Executive Director Socorro Rivera said Wednesday ?the sun and energy conservation have become great allies of Fondita de Jes?s. With the $1,000-plus we are saving, we are now able to reach more people.?

During a walk-through of the solar panel project, Energy Affairs Executive Director Luis Bernal said, ?through this project, we see how the government and community organizations join in favor of our people.?

Fondita de Jes?s, is one of a more than a dozen local nonprofits ? including Iniciativa Comunitaria, Ashford Presbyterian Hospital, Camuy Health Services, CODERI, YMCA, Hogar Sor Maria Rafaela, Proyecto PECES in Humacao, and Caribe Girl Scouts ? that have split $1 million in funding to develop energy conservation and renewable energy projects in their facilities, the Energy Affairs Administration said.
